Today is full of studio madness. I am trying to get ready for the annual Books Inc. Studio Sale, The Garden Party, Epot Center and the Heart of Florida Paint Out. What a baffeling experience. What to take where? Sorting frames, doing multiple inventories, You get the picture. I think I need to slow down and take one step at time.
The Books Inc show is all of my older work, all unframed, a clearance if you will. April 1-30, 2008 For those of you who live in the Alahua county area, Lake City or Ocala, it is on the corner of NW 13th Street and 5th Ave, just 5 blocks from the entrance of UF campus. I have it once a year at the book shop and people wait for it. :>)
I'm not one to keep things in the studio for more than a year or two. Part of the reason is that I am so prolific as a painter. Doing 3 to 4 hundred paintings and studies a year gives me a lot of paintings to sort through and put in the sale. Often these paintings are part of growth stages for me, sort of prototypes for later work. Experiments if you will in the early learning stages of new projects. Perhaps my palette has changed and I want to only have my new work represented in the galleries and studio, so this is a good way to recoup my materials costs and to get my old work out of the studio into someones home who will appreciate it, but who cannot afford my new work. I will have 86 paintings ranging in sizes from 24x24 to 6x8 inches. There should be something for everyone.
I'm in the early stages of planning my annual Hot Dog Party on June 14, 2008. I have two favorite parties a year, one in November, the Chili Party and the other in June, The Summer Picnic in my studio. I always make hot dogs with all the toppings, baked beans, and homemade potato salad. I usually choose some easy dessert like cookies or brownies. My friend Sarah Carey told me that she had found some awesome cream cheese brownies at Publix Market so that sounds like a plan for the party.
I always have an art theme for my parties too. One year I had a salon style hanging of 5x7 inch paintings. I hung them on every wall and every inch of space in the studio. it was great fun. I ordered a ton of little frames which all matched so it looked very cool. This year I think I will feature my gouache paintings for the summer party. I love doing them so much! They are all 4x6 inches, so I will order 5x7 frames again and show them all off. It's fun to have a theme and it makes sense to show off what you are working on. People are interested I think. It might be fun to sit out paper and gouache paints so that they can try the medium themselves as part of the experience. I think I could get my sponsor to donate a few paints and brushes for the party. I could put a sign out for them as the donor. I always give a gift certificate for the studio at the party too, so people love it when they win. I will need to design a postcard invitation soon for the party. Perhaps I'll make a poster too. Yippeee!! Another project!!

Here is the next WIP
Lake Prevatt Path
24x24 inches
oil on canvas
I am putting together the palette I want to use for the Evinston event. This on is fairly versatile and not too green, but on the other hand, it may be too warm. I am still in the Wekiva mode where it was cool weather and warm colors with lots of pinks and purples.
I think further tweaking will be necessary. I'm thinking I will need to add a lemon yellow to the palette to get the spring color but I don't know. Lemon yellow gets very out of control without judicious care.
Here is the palette for the above painting:
Daniel Greene Sap Green
Daniel Green Titanium White
Daniel Green FUB
Daniel Greene Yellow Ochre
Utrecht Red Iron Oxide
Utrecht Naples Yellow Light
Daniel Greene Ivory Black
Daniel Greene Alizarin Crimson
Utrecht Cad Red Light
I might sub Cad Lemon yellow for the yellow ochre or bring both. I could also leave out the cad red light but I think I'll keep it. This palette gives me a very full range but avoids the strong blues like thalo and Prussian. I under toned the canvas with an opaque cover of trans red oxide with white. it is a lovely under painting color peeking through the other layers of paint. Very pretty. For spring I may instead undertone with FUB and white. It will save me time each day to paint on toned canvas. It also creates harmony of overall color.
Today's Recipe:
I've always been a big fan of Perdue Chicken. I think it is the best brand. I got this off their web site and it is really easy and good.
Ingredients
1 package PERDUE® SHORT CUTS® Carved Chicken Breast, Grilled Italian Style
8 ounces your favorite pasta
1 bag your favorite frozen vegetable blend, thawed (1 pound)
1 jar Alfredo Sauce (1 pound)
Preparation Steps
Prepare pasta according to package directions, adding in vegetables during the last 3 minutes of cooking.
Meanwhile, in medium saucepan, heat chicken and Alfredo Sauce over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, 5 minutes.
Serve chicken mixture over hot pasta and vegetables.
