Yesterday I took eight paintings over to a local church for the annual exhibit for my community art league. Many of the painters there are hobbyists. Some are superior artists and some are not. There are very few professional level artists who belong to the art league. I feel that is a mistake. I believe our professional artists should be members and support the artists who aspire to professionalism some day. Why is it that pros are so afraid to rub elbows with hobbyists? What are they afraid of? I am proud to be a member of two north Florida Art Leagues and I try to put paintings in at least one of their shows each year. I don't make it to many meetings, but that is because I am not a meeting type person.
If more professional artists would actively support community art leagues and art centers, we would have a renewed interest in arts for our cities and towns. Not every artist can make a living doing their art, but being a part of the local art scene, spending time with well known artists can be a joy and pleasure for a hobbyist. I think artists who have made a certain success with their career can help others so much. Why be elitist about success? That helps no one. Instead, give the gift of knowledge and good will to fellow artists and enhance their experiences with art.
I saw my old friend Roz Miller HERE when I dropped off my paintings. She is doing some very exciting abstract mixed media. It is thick acrylic paint with metallics, beads, metallic thread and other parts and pieces. Really cool looking stuff. It's always great to see what people can do with art.
I like mixing all sorts of greens, being a landscape painter makes that pretty important.
Here are a few combinations which might be useful. More of the cool partner will cool the temperature. More of the warm partner will warm the temperature. Tinting with white always cools the mix. If you want to lighten a warm mix try Naples instead of white.
transparent red iron oxide/Prussian blue ( Makes a rich black. cool or warm by adjusting the red or blue)
FUB/Naples yellow light
ivory black/yellow ochre
ivory black/cad yellow medium
thalo blue/cad lemon yellow

Add a bit of cad red light to any to subdue the mix. There are of course other options too, but the above are ones I use frequently instead of tube greens.
Today's Recipe:
This one gives you healthy fries and they are very good.
Peal four sweet potatoes. Slice into fries. Spray a baking pan with non stick spray. Spread out the fries. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Spray potatoes with the non stick spray pretty thickly. Salt and pepper the potatoes and bake until lightly browned and crisp. You will need to turn them a couple of times.

I had the opposite problem with the art league just outside of town in that most were hobbyists and quite a few had a bit of a chip on their shoulder around professional artists. I was finding myself walking on egg shells, and it takes a LOT for me to feel that way.
On the other hand I am devoted to supporting and volunteering with the local arts council, which is easy because the are a smashing group.
I am still doing jenny craig, but your recipe today fits right in :) YUM!!!!!!!!
Jafabrit,
That is an interesting turn of events. I had not considered that issue. Thanks for sharing it.
Jafabrit,
I actually have more problems in that area with professional artists than with hobbyists. I find many pros to be very competitive and territorial most of the time.

I haven't faced that Linda, not with professional artists (although I did a bit in New Jersey). Well there are a few elitists here in our village, but perhaps because I do a lot of promotion of artists(through the arts council/blog and creating venues and events) they have kept their attitude with me at bay. Or maybe they think I am so off the wall they don't care LOL!!!!!!
I suppose different areas, genres, etc play a role in it.
The more off the wall the better Jafabrit:>)
I think the problem here is that there are simply too many professional artists in Florida. It means a scrabble for the bits and pieces of the pie that are thrown out to us.
Love,
Linda
Linda, best to you for the exhibit!
Jean, The magazine come out in April, so I'm looking forward to th good publicity.
