Myakka River
30x40 inches
oil on stretched gallery wrap canvas
I think I'm done with this. I am not one to over work a painting. I had such a great time with it.
I have started a companion piece to the above painting, using another photo of the Myakka River. It will be fun to show them together and they will add to my body of work for the river series. The reporter asked me the other day how many paintings I had done in the series and I could not answer. I have no idea, but many would be my answer. Quite a few of them have been sold. My hope is to have an exhibition for them in a museum at some future date, or in one of my galleries.
Here is the start for the companion painting, same size and support:

My intent for this one is a very clean simple composition. I have repeated the diagonal from the far left palm up in the sky with the clouds, as I want to break up the dominant horizontal field of grass. I will change some of the trunk intervals so they are not little soldiers lined up, but I think I like the composition as is. The job is to portray the vastness of the river grasses. This painting will have a fairly subdued palette with lots of neutrals made with compliments. I'm really beginning to like these large formats. Yikes!! I can just imagine the storage problems already.
I have gotten lots of calls and emails this month from artists wanting to come to my two monthly classes. The more the merrier for Plein Air Monthly. I'm trying to figure out how to stretch my studio big enough to fit all my friends in the first Sunday of the month. I think it is time to get rid of some stuff and make more space. I hope to have enough time next week between Tuesday and Sunday to pack some stuff up and get rid of it. I think if the weather is nice, I could set up a couple of easels out in the yard for painters, especially now while it is cool. This is always a problem for artists. There is never enough room. I think I need to buy about 4 more table top easels too. That will help. I actually do have some counter top space. Last night I bought two more folding chairs for the table easels. They are more comfortable than the stools I think.
Today's Recipe:
This is an easy way to make hearty bean soup.
1 can navy beans
1 can baked beans
1 can great northern beans
1 can pinto beans
3 cans chicken stock
salt/pepper to taste
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
1 small onion diced
4 strips bacon diced
2 carrots chopped
1 stalk celery chopped
1/2 teaspoon chopped or dried parsley
1 chopped tomato
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
hot sauce
Saute the chopped carrots, onion, bacon, celery, tomato with thyme and parsley until softened a bit. Pour in the beans and chicken stock, one can at a time. It it seems enough liquid, don't add the third can. Stir and simmer about 40 minutes. Add vinegar and a couple of dashes hot sauce. Check seasoning and serve with crusty bread.
